The revival of Backyard Sports is getting considerably bigger. Playground Productions officially announced Backyard Sports: The Animated Series during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, turning the long-running sports video game franchise into a 20-episode animated show.
The series will bring back a large voice cast that has already begun establishing the personalities of the revived Backyard Kids. Tiffany Haddish returns as Kiesha Phillips, Donald Faison as Dante Robinson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Dmitri Petrovich, alongside Arturo Castro, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ashleigh Crystal Hairston and several other performers.
Playground Productions revealed first-look images and a sizzle reel during its July 24 “Backyard Sports Returns” panel at Comic-Con. The announcement represents another major step in a revival that began by bringing the classic games back to modern audiences and has since expanded into new games, animation and other entertainment.
From an Animated Special to a Full Series
The new series follows Backyard Sports: The Animated Special, an 11-minute production released in January 2026. The special provided the first substantial opportunity to see the revived Backyard Kids carry a story outside the games while introducing the current voice cast.
Haddish voiced Kiesha Phillips, while Faison played Dante Robinson and Mintz-Plasse took on Dmitri Petrovich. Arturo Castro voiced fan favorite Pablo Sanchez, with Utkarsh Ambudkar as Achmed Khan, Ego Nwodim as Stephanie Morgan and Adam Pally as Pete Wheeler. Ashleigh Crystal Hairston, Deborah Baker Jr., Michael Vlamis and Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett also contributed to the ensemble.
The special effectively demonstrated what Backyard Sports could look like as an animated property. Comic-Con confirmed that the experiment was becoming something substantially larger. Playground Productions is producing 20 approximately 11-minute episodes for the new series, giving the characters considerably more room to develop beyond their appearances in the games.
Chris Waters, Playground Productions’ chief product officer, serves as showrunner. Juston Gordon-Montgomery is supervising director, while Adam Aseraf and Sarah Nevada Smith serve as head writers and co-executive producers. Lighthouse Studios is providing animation services.
The Backyard Sports Animated Series Voice Cast
The full series retains many of the performers involved in the franchise’s recent animated revival while adding voices for more of the original Backyard Kids.
The confirmed cast includes:

The ensemble mixes actors with extensive animation experience and performers better known for live-action or online work. Haddish has accumulated numerous animation credits alongside her live-action career, while Faison has previously performed in projects including Robot Chicken and Star Wars Resistance. Mintz-Plasse’s voice work includes Fishlegs throughout the How to Train Your Dragon animated franchise.
Other members bring particularly deep voice acting experience. Hairston voices Hazel Wells in The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish, while Tong has a lengthy animation résumé that includes Ninjago, Sonic Prime and My Little Pony. Their involvement helps give the series a cast capable of carrying characters who were originally defined largely through video game dialogue and personality traits.
Several of those performers were also directly involved in the Comic-Con presentation. Hairston, Mintz-Plasse, Baker Jr., Neff and Tong joined Barnett, Waters and other members of the Backyard Sports team for the panel.
Giving the Backyard Kids More Room to Grow
The move into episodic animation presents an interesting opportunity for a franchise whose characters have remained recognizable for decades despite originating in relatively simple sports games.
Backyard Baseball debuted in 1997 and introduced a neighborhood group of children who would eventually compete across baseball, football, basketball, soccer, hockey and other sports. The games developed a particularly memorable cast, with Pablo Sanchez becoming perhaps the franchise’s best-known original character.
Later titles incorporated child versions of real professional athletes, but the fictional Backyard Kids remained central to the series’ identity. Their designs, voices and personalities helped distinguish Backyard Sports from conventional licensed sports games.
A television format changes how those personalities can be used. Instead of primarily reacting to games and sporting situations, the characters can have stories built around their friendships, rivalries and lives within the neighborhood. The January animated special offered an early example, but a 20-episode season provides substantially more space for individual characters and relationships.
That also makes the voice cast increasingly important to the revived franchise. Players once encountered the Backyard Kids through short lines, animations and game scenarios. The animated series asks its performers to carry longer stories while preserving the personalities longtime fans associate with characters that have existed for nearly three decades.
Backyard Sports Is Building Beyond the Games
The animated series arrives during a much broader effort to rebuild Backyard Sports. Playground Productions announced the franchise’s return in 2024 and has since reintroduced classic titles while developing new projects around the property.
That revival accelerated in 2026. The animated special arrived in January, while a newly rebuilt Backyard Baseball launched for PC and Mac in July. Playground Productions used Comic-Con to present animation, games and other parts of the franchise together rather than treating the new series as an isolated adaptation.
The approach allows the same characters to move between formats. Performers such as Hairston, Tong, Neff and Barnett are already closely involved with the revived franchise, while the animated productions have brought recognizable actors including Haddish, Faison, Mintz-Plasse, Castro and Ambudkar into the Backyard.
Backyard Sports: The Animated Series is currently expected to debut in January 2027. The 20 short-form episodes will continue the direction established by the animated special while giving the Backyard Kids their largest sustained animated showcase yet.
For a franchise built around a cast of memorable neighborhood characters, that expansion makes the voices behind those characters increasingly central to its comeback. Comic-Con may have provided the venue for announcing the series, but the larger story is how Backyard Sports is turning a group created for late-1990s computer games into an ensemble capable of carrying an animated franchise of its own.
