Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Revisits Edward Kenway’s Story With Matt Ryan

By Voice Over News Staff. Published on: October 13, 2026

Nearly four months after its July 9, 2026 release, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has established itself as one of Ubisoft’s more successful attempts to revisit a classic entry in its long-running franchise. The remake brings the Caribbean adventures of Edward Kenway to modern platforms with improved visuals, redesigned gameplay mechanics, and additional story content that expands on the original 2013 game.

Developed under the leadership of Ubisoft Singapore, the remake received generally positive reviews and achieved strong initial sales. Ubisoft reported that Black Flag Resynced sold two million copies on its first day and surpassed three million within its opening week. Critics praised its visual improvements, expanded world, and updated naval combat, although some questioned changes to familiar gameplay systems and the removal of certain original content.

An important part of the remake’s continuity comes from Welsh actor Matt Ryan, who returned to portray Edward Kenway after more than a decade. Rather than simply preserving his original recordings, Ubisoft brought Ryan back to perform additional dialogue for new scenes, allowing the remake to expand Edward’s story while maintaining the voice that players have associated with the character since 2013.

Black Flag Resynced Modernizes a Familiar Pirate Adventure

The original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag arrived in 2013 and quickly distinguished itself through its emphasis on naval exploration and piracy. Set during the Golden Age of Piracy, the game followed Edward Kenway, a Welsh privateer whose pursuit of wealth and adventure eventually brought him into the conflict between the Assassins and Templars.

The remake preserves that central premise while rebuilding the experience using Ubisoft’s updated Anvil engine. The Caribbean environments feature more detailed landscapes, improved lighting, richer character models, and additional environmental effects. Cities such as Havana, Nassau, and Kingston retain their familiar identities while benefiting from modern graphical technology.

Gameplay has also undergone substantial changes. The combat system places greater emphasis on combinations of attacks and precisely timed parries, while improved parkour mechanics make Edward’s movement through cities and other environments more fluid. Stealth has received additional attention, including the ability to crouch freely and recover from certain mistakes during surveillance missions.

Naval exploration remains one of the game’s defining features. Players continue to command Edward’s ship, the Jackdaw, engaging enemy vessels, boarding ships, and exploring the Caribbean. Expanded naval weapons and dynamic weather conditions introduce additional considerations during encounters at sea.

These changes have generally been well received, although reviews have also identified areas where the modernization is less successful. Some critics found the revised combat repetitive over extended sessions, while others preferred the movement and combat systems of the original release.

The removal of portions of the original game’s modern-day narrative has also attracted criticism. Although the remake introduces additional story material, some reviewers argued that eliminating those sections reduces the broader Assassin’s Creed context that helped connect Edward’s adventure to the rest of the franchise.

Nevertheless, the overall critical response has been favorable. The remake earned review scores in the mid-80s on major review aggregation platforms at launch, reflecting widespread appreciation for its visual presentation and the enduring appeal of its pirate setting.

Matt Ryan Returns to Give Edward Kenway New Dialogue

One of the remake’s most significant casting decisions was bringing back Matt Ryan as Edward Kenway. Ryan originally portrayed the character in 2013, establishing a vocal identity that combined confidence, humor, arrogance, and emotional vulnerability.

Unlike several other protagonists in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Edward begins his adventure without a strong commitment to the Assassin Brotherhood. His early motivations revolve around personal fortune and freedom, and his gradual development into a more responsible individual forms the emotional foundation of the story.

Ryan’s performance was essential to communicating that transformation. Edward’s distinctive Welsh accent, quick-witted dialogue, and increasingly reflective personality helped establish him as a recognizable character within the franchise.

For Black Flag Resynced, Ubisoft retained that connection by inviting Ryan to record new material. The additional dialogue supports expanded scenes and narrative developments, allowing the remake to explore aspects of Edward’s personality and relationships that received less attention in the original release.

In a May 2026 interview with Game Informer, Ryan discussed the experience of returning to Edward after 13 years. He described reconnecting with the character as a nostalgic experience and explained that his voice had become slightly lower with age. Despite that change, he found himself able to return to Edward’s personality and mannerisms without significant difficulty.

Ryan also emphasized that the additional scenes were intended to deepen the character rather than simply increase the amount of dialogue. His comments highlighted the creative challenge of revisiting an established performance while ensuring that new material feels consistent with the original portrayal.

That continuity is particularly important in a remake that combines familiar narrative sequences with newly recorded content. Edward must remain recognizable throughout the experience, even when players encounter scenes that did not exist in the 2013 game.

Ryan’s return demonstrates how retaining an original performer can help preserve a character’s identity while allowing developers to expand an established story.

New Story Content Adds Depth to Edward’s Relationships

Beyond the graphical and gameplay improvements, Black Flag Resynced introduces additional narrative content that revisits important relationships from Edward Kenway’s journey.

Among the additions is a new scene involving Edward’s wife, Caroline, written by Darby McDevitt, who served as the lead writer on the original game. Caroline plays an important role in Edward’s personal history, representing the life he leaves behind while pursuing wealth and adventure overseas.

Expanding that relationship provides additional context for Edward’s motivations and the consequences of his decisions. His journey is not simply about becoming a successful pirate or joining the Assassins, but also about confronting the personal losses associated with his ambitions.

The remake also expands material involving other characters, including the notorious pirate Blackbeard. These additions provide opportunities to develop relationships that contribute to Edward’s changing understanding of loyalty, friendship, and responsibility.

For Ryan, the expanded narrative creates opportunities to revisit emotional aspects of Edward’s personality. Scenes involving personal relationships require a different performance from the confident exchanges and confrontations that dominate much of the character’s early adventure.

This is where additional voice recording becomes especially relevant. While improved facial animation and character models can enhance the presentation of an existing scene, newly written dialogue allows the developers to explore emotional developments that were not previously included.

The remake’s approach also illustrates the difference between preserving an original performance and extending it. Rather than replacing the character’s established identity, the additional material builds upon the foundation Ryan created more than a decade earlier.

Strong Sales and Positive Reviews Reinforce Black Flag’s Appeal

The commercial response to Black Flag Resynced suggests that Edward Kenway’s adventure continues to attract considerable interest. Ubisoft announced two million sales within the first day and more than three million copies sold during the opening week, alongside strong initial activity on Steam.

The company also reported improvements in player sentiment following post-launch updates addressing technical issues and quality-of-life concerns. A New Game+ mode was among the additional features announced after release, offering further replay opportunities for players interested in returning to Edward’s journey.

Critical reception has been more nuanced than the sales figures alone might suggest. Reviewers generally welcomed the visual overhaul and expanded gameplay, but several also questioned whether every modernization improved upon the original experience.

Those criticisms reflect the difficulties associated with remaking a well-regarded game. Changes that make a title more accessible to newcomers can sometimes alter the mechanics or atmosphere that returning players remember.

For Black Flag Resynced, however, Edward Kenway’s story has remained one of the strongest points of continuity between the two versions. The central narrative continues to follow a character whose ambitions, mistakes, and eventual personal growth distinguish him from many other protagonists in the series.

Matt Ryan’s involvement helps maintain that connection. His return ensures that the remake’s expanded story is delivered by the performer who originally established Edward’s personality, preserving a recognizable element of the character while introducing new material.

Nearly four months after launch, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced offers an example of how a modern remake can combine technical improvements with additional character development. Although its gameplay changes have divided some critics, the decision to retain Ryan and expand Edward Kenway’s story has allowed Ubisoft to revisit one of the franchise’s most recognizable protagonists without abandoning the performance that helped define him.
