The Expanse Osiris Reborn Overhauls Voice Acting and Gameplay After Beta Feedback

By Voice Over News Staff. Published on: October 15, 2026

Owlcat Games is making significant changes to The Expanse: Osiris Reborn following feedback from its April 2026 closed beta, including the decision to replace the male protagonist’s voice actor. The upcoming science-fiction action RPG, based on the universe of The Expanse, has undergone revisions to its dialogue, character animations, and gameplay systems as the developer prepares for its planned spring 2027 release.

The voice actor replacement was initially announced in May, after players raised concerns about the male protagonist’s vocal performance. The same performer also portrayed the protagonist’s twin, J, meaning the decision affects two important characters within the game’s narrative. Owlcat subsequently confirmed that the recasting process was continuing, although the studio has not publicly identified the replacement performer.

More recent development updates indicate that the studio is addressing a broader collection of concerns raised during testing. Alongside the voice acting changes, Owlcat has been refining character interactions, improving animation quality, and adjusting combat mechanics to create a more polished experience.

Owlcat Games Replaces the Male Protagonist’s Voice Actor

The decision to replace the male protagonist’s voice actor emerged from player feedback following the game’s closed beta in April 2026. Participants were given an early opportunity to experience the game’s combat, dialogue, and character interactions, providing Owlcat with information about areas that required further development.

Among the concerns raised was the performance of the male protagonist, whose dialogue plays an important role in the game’s narrative. Players criticized aspects of the delivery, prompting the developer to reconsider whether the existing performance adequately represented the character’s intended personality and emotional range.

In May, Owlcat confirmed that it would recast the male protagonist and his twin, J. Both characters had been portrayed by the same actor, making the decision more substantial than replacing a single supporting role. The studio acknowledged the original performer’s contribution while explaining that it wanted greater expressiveness from the characters.

The identity of the original performer was not publicly disclosed, and Owlcat did not attribute the decision to any specific professional shortcomings. Instead, the announcement positioned the replacement as part of the development process, with the studio responding to feedback about how the characters were presented in the beta.

Replacing a central voice actor can involve considerable production work, particularly in a role-playing game where conversations and narrative choices form a major part of the experience. The protagonist must respond to different characters and situations, often requiring dialogue that communicates a range of emotions depending on the circumstances.

The decision also carries additional importance because the same performer voices J, a character whose relationship with the protagonist contributes to the game’s central story. Maintaining a convincing connection between the twins while giving each a distinct personality presents an unusual acting challenge.

Although Owlcat has not provided detailed information about the recording process, the recasting represents a significant change to one of the game’s most prominent performances.

September Update Confirms the Recasting Is Still Underway

The voice actor replacement remained an active development issue several months after the original announcement. During a Gamescom 2026 interview published in September, Owlcat creative director Alexander Mishulin discussed the studio’s response to feedback and provided additional context about the changes being made.

Mishulin identified the male protagonist’s voiceover as one of the major concerns raised during testing. The studio had reviewed player reactions and concluded that a different performance would better support the character and the game’s narrative presentation.

However, Owlcat was not ready to introduce the replacement actor or demonstrate the revised performance. The developer also did not provide a specific timeline for revealing the new voice, leaving the identity of the performer unconfirmed in the available public information.

The update demonstrated that the decision was not simply an isolated response to criticism in May. Instead, the recasting had become part of a broader development effort extending through the months following the beta.

For a narrative-focused RPG, the protagonist’s voice is particularly important because players spend considerable time listening to conversations involving the central character. Unlike games with largely silent protagonists, a fully voiced lead must communicate personality and emotional reactions while remaining compatible with the choices available to the player.

This can create challenges when the same character must deliver dialogue across different narrative circumstances. A performance needs sufficient flexibility to support serious confrontations, casual exchanges, personal relationships, and moments of emotional vulnerability.

In The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, the relationship between the protagonist and J adds another dimension. Because the characters are twins, their shared background must feel believable without making their individual personalities indistinguishable.

Owlcat’s decision to revisit both performances suggests that the studio considers their characterization important to the overall experience. The effectiveness of the replacement, however, will remain difficult to assess until the revised dialogue is demonstrated publicly.

Dialogue and Animation Changes Aim to Improve Character Performances

Voice acting is only one component of how characters are presented in a video game, and Owlcat’s response to beta feedback has extended into several related areas. The developer has acknowledged concerns about dialogue, facial animation, character movement, and the consistency of interactions between the protagonist and other members of the cast.

These elements are closely connected because a convincing vocal performance depends partly on how it is presented visually. Facial expressions, gestures, and character reactions help communicate emotions that may not be fully conveyed through dialogue alone.

When animation does not match the emotional intensity of a scene, the resulting interaction can appear unnatural even if the recorded performance is appropriate. Similarly, dialogue that feels inconsistent with a character’s circumstances can make a conversation less convincing regardless of the actor’s delivery.

Owlcat has indicated that it is refining character animations and interactions to address these concerns. Improvements to facial expressions and body movement are intended to create more natural conversations, while adjustments to dialogue aim to strengthen the consistency of character behavior.

The studio has also been reviewing how companions respond to the protagonist and interact with one another. These relationships are particularly important in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, which places considerable emphasis on a crew of characters navigating dangerous circumstances together.

The game’s setting adds further expectations for its dialogue. The Expanse is known for its grounded approach to science fiction, political tensions, and characters whose decisions are influenced by competing loyalties and difficult circumstances. Conversations need to support that atmosphere while allowing players to influence the direction of the story.

Beyond narrative presentation, Owlcat has been making changes to combat responsiveness, cover mechanics, and other gameplay systems. These revisions reflect the studio’s broader effort to improve the experience before release, rather than concentrating exclusively on the criticism surrounding the protagonist’s voice.

The combination of new recordings, revised dialogue, and improved animations could significantly change how the characters are perceived compared with their beta appearances. However, the extent of those improvements will only become clear when Owlcat provides a more complete demonstration of the updated game.

The Expanse Osiris Reborn Prepares for Its 2027 Release

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a third-person action RPG set within the science-fiction universe created by James S. A. Corey. Developed by Owlcat Games, the project combines tactical combat, exploration, narrative decisions, and companion relationships within a setting shaped by political conflict and humanity’s expansion across the solar system.

Players create a protagonist who becomes caught in a dangerous situation following events at an asteroid mining station. The character’s twin, J, plays an important role in the unfolding story, while other companions contribute to the player’s journey through their individual personalities, backgrounds, and relationships.

The game draws inspiration from character-driven science-fiction RPGs, with players making decisions that influence conversations and relationships. Its combat system features third-person shooting, squad-based tactics, and the use of cover, while exploration and dialogue provide opportunities to develop the story outside combat encounters.

These systems place considerable importance on the game’s voice cast. Companions must remain recognizable throughout different situations, and their performances need to support both scripted story developments and interactions influenced by player decisions.

The protagonist presents an especially demanding role because the character serves as the player’s primary connection to the narrative. Dialogue must accommodate different emotional responses while maintaining a consistent personality, making casting and voice direction important considerations during development.

Owlcat is targeting a spring 2027 release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with Xbox Game Pass availability also announced. The remaining development period provides the studio with additional time to refine the systems and performances that attracted criticism during the beta.

The decision to replace the male protagonist’s voice actor has become one of the most notable examples of Owlcat responding directly to player feedback. Rather than treating the original recordings as final, the developer has chosen to revisit an important part of the game’s narrative presentation alongside improvements to dialogue and animation.

With the replacement performer still unidentified in public updates, attention will likely turn to the next demonstration of the game’s characters and conversations. The revised performances will provide a clearer indication of how Owlcat’s changes have affected the protagonist, J, and the overall storytelling experience in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn.
